Context

The situation

Even with a dedicated IT person onsite school networks can be incredibly complex. For one Class B school their single technician was doing great work but the challenges of advanced networking and firewall issues were growing too big for one person to handle alone. Through the ERate program and MIBS services we extended an expert hand ensuring the school's network was secured and freed up their valuable onsite technician to focus on immediate classroom needs.

This Class B school had a dedicated on-site technician, a valuable asset for daily tech issues. However, the school faced a significant and growing problem: advanced networking and firewall configuration and troubleshooting issues were beyond the scope of a single individual and hiring was out of the question due to budget.

When complicated network or firewall issues arose the onsite technician lacked specialized expertise leading to lingering problems that disrupted connectivity and security. These issues also consumed the technician's time, diverting them from crucial classroom support and creating bottlenecks.

Improper firewall settings and unaddressed vulnerabilities posed a constant security risk to student data, while the network's potential remained stifled without expert configuration. The combined effect of downtime and security risks resulted in significant hidden operational costs. The school urgently needed advanced networking and firewall expertise to ensure their digital infrastructure was secured and fully functional.

Goals

What they needed

Their goals

The school's leadership understood the limitations of a single IT resource facing those network challenges. Their goals were focused on strengthening their backbone and providing additional support to their onsite technician:

  • Access Advanced Expertise Their top priority was to gain immediate access to specialized knowledge for high level networking and firewall issues.
  • Resolve Complex Problems Quickly They needed a solution that would help quickly troubleshoot and fix complex network and firewall challenges.
  • Free Up On-Site Staff They wanted to reduce the burden on their single technician allowing them to focus on day to day classroom support and essential tasks.
  • Enhance Network Security Ensuring their firewall was correctly configured and their network was robustly defended was a critical objective.
  • Utilize ERate Funding They aimed to effectively use available ERate funds to make this essential support financially feasible.
What the solution had to include

To achieve these goals the school specifically needed a solution with the following capabilities and support:

  • Remote access to expert-level IT support specializing in networking and firewall configuration.
  • Consistent "Layer 2" networking support for in-depth troubleshooting and configuration.
  • A method to escalate complex technical issues beyond the scope of their onsite staff.
  • Guidance on optimizing firewall settings for enhanced security.
  • A support model that could be utilized under the ERate program's Managed Internal Broadband Services (MIBS).
Key stages

How we did it

Our approach was designed to seamlessly integrate with their existing IT structure, providing an immediate and effective extension of their capabilities:

  1. Initial Assessment We began with a thorough remote assessment of their network and firewall setup, understanding their current challenges.
  2. Established Secure Remote Access We set up secure remote access to their network infrastructure, allowing our certified technicians to provide direct support for advanced configurations and troubleshooting.
  3. Provided Consistent Layer 2 Support Our team delivered ongoing specialized Layer 2 networking support, assisting their onsite technician with complex routing, switching, VLAN configurations, and deep dive troubleshooting.
  4. Firewall Optimization & Troubleshooting We actively engaged in firewall configuration, policy optimization, and advanced troubleshooting, ensuring their network was secured.
  5. Direct Collaboration with Onsite Technician We fostered direct clear communication and collaboration with the school's onsite technician, acting as an extension of their team and providing immediate escalation points for difficult problems.
  6. Proactive Monitoring (where applicable) Where appropriate we implemented remote monitoring tools to proactively identify potential issues before they escalated further enhancing network stability.
The solution

What we put in place

We provided a comprehensive solution by offering consistent expert Layer 2 networking and firewall support through the ERate Managed Internal Broadband Services (MIBS) program. This gave the school's onsite technician a direct line to advanced remote assistance ensuring complex network issues were promptly addressed and configurations were optimized.

Next steps

Is your school in the same spot?

  • You have an onsite technician, but complex network and firewall issues are beyond one person.
  • Network problems linger because no one on staff has the specialized expertise.
  • Your technician gets pulled away from classroom support to chase network issues.
  • Hiring another IT person is not in the budget.

If your technician could use backup, talk with our team about expert network and firewall support and whether ERate MIBS could help fund it.
